Robert F. Lyon expects his ITE residency to continue to blur the distinction between art and craft in his work. He will expand his conceptual ideas into larger turnings within installation formats. Environmental fragility, memory, beauty, and cultural identity are reoccurring themes in his work. He plans to utilize the collaborative ITE process as a way of generating new methods of thinking and working – for his personal work, as well as the evolution he can share when he returns to his students.

Arrived back to Philly from the Echo Lake Conference. A wonderful experience working with 50 artists on new techniques and form. Included are a couple of photos of my “Left-Handed Vessel” turned from a “Tornado” Bowling Ball.
Additionally, Jerome Blanc and I collaborated on a turned ash piece titled “Rock Climber”. This piece helps remind Jerome of his mountain home in Switzerland. Please see image below.

A long but productive day in the studio. My work with the pencil continues. I have become interested in the metaphor of the pencil as a tool for doodlers, its relationship to thinking and creativity and as a tool for spontaneity.
Here you will find two photos, one of “Ticonderoga Vessel” and one of me working on a new piece today.

Hi Bob,
I just reviewed your Wood + Clay sculpture and was totally impressed. They transcend the materials. When was this body of work made? Do you plan to continue this series?

Hi Bob,
I enjoyed seeing how you have integrated pencils into some of your work. Also, it was very interesting to hear how your fellow resident artists suggested how to resolve the joints in your proposed wall mounted necklaces.
